Fort Tryon Park

1917

  • John D. Rockefeller acquires the land which becomes Fort Tryon Park

1927

  • Rockefeller hires Olmstead brothers to design park

1935

  • Construction complete

1970

  • Budget cuts drastically reduce parks funds and ability to upkeep

1985

  • Greenacre Foundation approaches NYC Parks with funds and plan to renovate Park. Project spear headed by Parks Commisioner Henry Stern and Parks Administrator Jane Schachat

1990

  • Manhattan Parks commissioner Adrian Benepe, Joseph Pierson and Edie Kean form what is now Fort Tryon Trust

  1. How were these pipes discovered? That’s fascinating that there wasn’t a record of them there before? Did those funding cuts affect other parks in the 70s, or just this one?
